A Hint Fiction

Jayne Martin issued a challenge today to write a piece of Hint fiction—a story of less than 25 words. Here's my attempt.
She told her boyfriend she needed to visit her sick aunt. She didn't tell him it was a one-way ticket. (20 words)

  1. And I'm sure she had good reason. In light of the recent shootings here in Santa Barbara, there's been much talked about re: the real physical fear many women feel in just these types of situations. Very timely!

  4. Well, it was a "need to know" type of information and he didn't need to know. I'm guessing he also didn't know that the ticket wasn't to her aunt's house. Well done!

  5. Haha. You're correct, Nicky, he didn't need to know. My thinking was she didn't say anything because she wanted to avoid a confrontation. As far as where she actually went, that's an interesting part of flash fiction. Often there are things left for the reader to decide.

    1. "Often there are things left for the reader to decide." That interaction is part of the fun for me.

  6. Poor guy. I wonder what he did to tick her off.

  7. Or maybe it's what he didn't do. :)

  10. Probably it took a lot of courage, and maybe time to save for the one way ticket.. she had to slip out the back door..must have had reason. Well done.

  11. Wow. You got a lot of comments on this one, Jim. Drop by and read some of the others through the Mr. Linky thingamajig. There are some very interesting entries. Some are first-timers at any form of flash and I know they'd appreciate your response to their work.

  13. Perhaps we all need to keep a one-way ticket in our back pockets. Just in case.

    1. Keeping a one-way ticket on hand. Now that might be an interesting prompt for a story. How would the person holding it react in a tough situation? The action taken would say a lot about the person wouldn't it.

  14. You managed to get a hint of danger in there. Well done.

  16. I think I did that once. Ok, I didn't but your story was so believable that I THOUGHT I might have done it once and that counts for a lot!
